Martial arts trainers

Martial arts trainers

The greatest goal of the «Andy Hug Foundation» is not just providing sponsorship funds. Moreover it aims to provide direct assistance and implementation. Qualified trainers are therefore being sent from Switzerland to the respective areas.

Selection and preparation

Trainers are selected from Goju Kan Bern, the centre for martial arts and health, for Karate, Kung Fu, Taiji, Qigong and Kickboxing. They work in teams of two for two to three months. The specific preparation for the work in Ethiopia focuses on the following areas:

- Training planning and organisation

- Project philosophy, education

- Ethiopian culture

- Basic Amharic (Ethiopian language)

- Drawing up an evaluation report

Working areas for trainers

Above all, the trainers work in three areas:

Training schoolchildren (former street children)

In a club system the children that have already been allocated to a school have the opportunity to train in a Dojo. Two lessons are offered daily for 10 children. It is envisaged that children have the opportunity to train three times a week. It is therefore assumed that about 40 children can be supported in the martial arts centre. Lessons are organised in line with the stated guidelines and are aimed at guaranteeing aftercare.

Training Ethiopian sports teachers

During the day, the Ethiopian sports teachers are trained so that they can improve their skills. The objective consists of providing knowledge of martial arts so that they will be able to run the martial arts centre independently in a year's time. The Swiss exchange staff can then concentrate on the further training of the Ethiopian sports teachers during the second year of the project. It is envisaged that they receive feedback, support and new incentives, and gain personal experience in the educational work with street children.

Rehabilitation

In conjunction with the sports teachers from «Sport – The Bridge», the trainers are deployed on a specific basis to support the rehabilitation process.
