Educational element of lessons

Dojo – the road starts in the room

The Dojo is the training room for martial artists. It is a common room where one and all are pitted against each other in a physical and spiritual sense, and provide each other with support. A place where the group's energy is intense and spreads.

The «Andy Hug Foundation» will be setting up a Dojo in Addis Ababa, which will become a place of learning, development, membership and source of power and motivation for the street children.

Training – developing skills

In a complete lesson the martial arts techniques become symbols for strategies aimed at solving problems. It is envisaged that the children develop skills that will assist them in solving the problems they are confronted with. For example a key aspect consists of dealing with emotions in difficult situations.

Rituals – harmony in the community

Great importance is attached to formal behaviour in martial arts. Characterised by the culture of the Far East, this disciplined behaviour is highly ritualised within the meaning of respect, attention and mutual consideration. These forms give rise to reflection, and are not merely superficial rituals. It is envisaged that they help us promote the quality of our connection with our inner being and our environment.

Self defence – setting limits

Protecting oneself and one's freedom is a human need. The ability to assert oneself and set vital limits is a key part of the martial arts training.

Health – promoting own responsibility

The human condition is geared towards health and harmony. It is envisaged that training play an effective part in teaching children to assume responsibility for their development. Methodical and technical incentives, and appropriate support, are aimed at promoting, in a targeted way, the ability to take decisions and action.
