Contribution by «Sport - The Bridge» aimed at solving the problem

All the activities of «Sport - The Bridge» focus on the principle of "help for self-help". The organisation has dispensed with building children's homes that take them away from their familiar environment. «Sport - The Bridge» believe the children should come to terms with their own reality and find their way in the process. The assistance consists of providing children with support from sports teachers aimed gradually rehabilitating them and guiding them back to their families. This is based on a sports education model designed especially for this project. The first group about 50 children have already been successfully integrated using this method and now attend public schools.
An appropriate evaluation report has already been drawn up.

Aftercare year – stabilising the children

In the aftercare year, «Sport - The Bridge» gives the children the opportunity to spend their leisure time on the project grounds in addition to their schooling. On the one hand they can visit tutorial classes where teachers provide support with their homework. They also have access to a library. On the other, they take part in football training three times a week for the junior team. There is also an opportunity to take circus lessons.
This offer guarantees that a link can be established between children and the project in the aftercare year. This gives the children a sense of security and provides them with worthwhile leisure activities – an alternative to the street.

The bonding with children helps to stabilise them and allows for the best possible aftercare. Problems at school and in the family are therefore recognised at an early stage.
It is envisaged that the sports activities be expanded in 2006 because at present the aftercare year for the children consists of football and circus training.
