Ethiopia is the world's poorest country. Hunger, poverty and drought are part of the country that has been weakened by war for decades. Above all, the victims are the weakest in society. Children – previously almost a blessing for the family – are simply deserted and live on the street. The vicissitudes of life such as AIDS mean they are sometimes without both parents, and therefore lack the network of a family. The children are orphaned and organise their lives themselves on the street. According to independent estimates, some 60,000 children are now living on the streets in Addis Ababa. The daily life of a street child is characterised by child prostitution, destitution, drugs, a fight for survival, gang fights, child labour and begging! However, the road back into society, the only long-term opportunity of any prospects, remains closed. This goal cannot be achieved without outside support. |
